Wikipedia: the free encyclopedia is one of the most popular sources for common knowledge (though not appropriate for research papers). But would Wikipedia exist without Diderot’s Encyclopedia? Diderot’s Encyclopedia was the first attempt at compiling all available human knowledge. Wikipedia has been trying to do this since around 2001, although its contributors do not have the same educational background or expertise as the contributors to Diderot’s project (Hindley, paragraph 4). The Encyclopedia has influenced our modern, technology, and information-oriented world.
The Encyclopedia has changed the way society views, systematically organizes, and accesses knowledge. It proposed the idea that everyone should have access to knowledge and that knowledge should be valued as a source of enlightenment. Because knowledge is power and fuels progress and change, the legacy of The Encyclopedia will endure.
